The Aquaponics Curriculum is designed for grades 6-10 and is an excellent tool for any teacher who is currently using or intends to use aquaponics in the classroom. The Educator’s Guide includes complete lesson plans, lesson outlines, time period, objectives, activities, required equipment, tests and answer keys and data forms. The Student’s Manual contains each complete lesson, data forms and test/review. Aquaponics, the combination of fish farming and hydroponics, allows one to grow fish and plants in a recirculating system while demonstrating many phases of science, biology and botany. In an aquaponic system, the fish consume food and excrete waste, primarily in the form of ammonia. The ammonia is converted to nitrite which is then converted to nitrate. The plants in the system consume nitrate, helping to purify the water in the process. The Aquaponics Curriculum has 8 chapters and covers these topics: Introduction to Aquaponics and System Design Establishing and Maintaining the Fish Tank / Water Quality Plant Selection and Care Seed Germination / Planting the Garden Plant Nutrient Requirements Photosynthesis and Light Introduction to Fish Anatomy Fish Nutrition and Health Includes: 1 Educator’s Guide, 1 Student Manual, Transparencies, Introductory Aquaponics CD-Rom and an annual subscription to the Aquaponics Journal |
